House Acquisition

2.28.01 Steve applies for a loan at Standard Federal and gets approved.
3.1.01 Steve reads a few classified ads.
3.2.01 Steve forgets all about looking for a house, other than to remember that he and Kristie will do it1 during their "honeymoon".
3.25.01 Kristie grabs a few home shopper type fliers, asks Steve some questions, and quickly discovers that he hasn't done much with the whole "house hunting" thing.
3.27.01 Kristie and Steve visit local realtor Ken Lieber, who turns out to be an old friend of Mark-->'s family.
3.27.01 They drive by the perfect house.
3.28.01 They drive by some less perfect houses and ask Ken to arrange a tour of two perfect ones.
3.29.01 Ken tells them that both perfect houses have been sold and provides some more listings.
3.30.01 They drive by a few more less perfect houses.
4.1.01 Kristie leaves for home and Steve realizes how much better it would be if they had their own place2.
4.2.01 Steve drives by more less than perfect houses. Ken provides new listings based on new criteria.
4.7.01 Steve drives by still more less than perfect houses. Ken provides new listings based on new criteria.
4.9.01 Steve drives by still more less than perfect houses. Ken provides new listings based on new criteria.
4.9.01 Kristie averts near disaster when Steve discovers that Ken's email doesn't work3.
4.10.01 Steve drives by two perfect houses. Ken arranges a tour for Friday the 13th.
4.13.01 Kristie, Ken, Karen (Ken's daughter), Steve, and Jerry (Steve's Dad) tour the two perfect houses. One proves less than perfect. Ken provides a tour of a third house, directly across Balfour from the meeting place for Winter Camp.
4.14.01 After much discussion and annoying of friends, relatives and anyone else who will listen, Kristie and Steve choose the perfect house.
4.16.01 After much discussion and annoying of friends, relatives and anyone else who will listen, Kristie and Steve make an offer on the perfect house.
4.16.01 The offer is accepted, a home inspection is scheduled for 4.20.01, and there is much rejoicing (especially among the previously pestered friends and relatives).
4.20.01 Steve and his dad got to the house about 5:25 p.m., 5 minutes early. The inspector was there even earlier and was basically finished with the outside of the house. He provided some advice as he made notes. Ken arrived. The door was tried, but had been deadbolted. Ken called the listing agent, who called the homeowner. The homeowner had forgotten4 about the appointment but said he'd be there in 20 minutes. 45 minutes later we left.
We're going to try again Monday.
4.21.01 Steve and Kristie drive the matriarch of the Donohue clan over to take a look at the house. A few pictures are taken.
4.23.01 Everybody made it this time and there were no surprises. Next stop: Loan officer.
4.27.01 Filled out and signed many forms. Our loan application is in and it should take 1-2 weeks to hear more.
5.5.01 Steve and Kristie discuss some home decorating ideas.
5.7.01 Got some home insurance quotes. Bowed to continuing pressure and called the bank even though it hasn't been 1-2 weeks yet. We expect to hear something this week. The appraisal is done - it's just a matter of paperwork now.
Spoke with Ken Lieber and tentatively scheduled our closing for May 18.
5.9.01 Changing the closing to 5.21.01 (we hope).
5.14.01 Closing is confirmed for 5.21.01.
5.16.01 We discover that we're actually going to be getting the keys on 5.21.01. Phone calls are made to arrange for insurance5, gas, electricity and phone service. We also get word that the seller took our offer for the stove and refrigerator.
5.20.01 We go shopping for furniture and appliances. We find a bedroom set, a dining room set6, and a washer and dryer. Kristie makes Steve very aware that "matte black" is not an acceptable color choice.
5.21.01 We sign the millions of pieces of paper for our house. The previous owner isn't out yet, but he's leaving behind a bunch of stuff so we're going to let him get away with it. We go by to measure for furniture and take a few photos.
5.21.01 from here, we go to the moving part of our home purchase.
  1. No Miller not that "do it", it means we'll look for a house. Sheesh!
  2. Ahem. Shut up Miller.
  3. It later turned out that he'd transfered service providers that very week.
  4. How someone can just "forget" about a hundred-thousand dollar plus transaction eluded all of us. It's not like forgetting to pack a toothbrush or something.
  5. The insurance people were very surprised to find out that we had a) called ahead and b) given them several days notice before the policy was required.
  6. Technically, it's just a placeholder until we find the perfect table.
