Bed Time

Steve has a serious problem with time1, particularly bed time. If he gets started on some kind of computer project, he loses track of all time and will not even notice that midnight, 1, 2, and 3 have passed him by as he continues to work on the project. The worst is usually if it's some sort of perl or javascript project where there's actual programming involved.

To help handle this, he has authorized Kristie to tell him when it's bedtime. This invariably results in an argument (from him) worthy of any two-year old. Among his favorites are: "You didn't give me any warning, you have to give me ten minutes warning", "Just let me finish what I'm doing", and "Okay, just fifteen more minutes."

Sadly for Steve, Kristie has learned the true meaning of each of these statements: "You didn't give me any warning" means that Steve isn't ready for bed yet and she should wait, because he's almost done. "Just let me finish this" means he'll probably be done in half an hour and (paradoxically) "just fifteen more minutes" means she should go to bed now and plan on fighting to wake him up in the morning2.

The fifteen minute ploy is the worst because he's usually trying to convince both of them that he's almost done. It's much better when he says "let me finish this" because that usually means just the page he's on. Anything else could mean he's up the rest of the night.

  1. Some people have called him a chronological liar.
  2. Assuming of course that she's getting up in the morning.
