Foiled Again!

As most of our friends (and now family) know, Steve is pretty serious about gaming1. He's been trying to get Kristie involved, but without much success. She likes some of the games but some of them don't make any sense or seem too hard for the reward.

When the Harry Potter Trading Card Game2 came out, Steve figured he was all set. Kristie was a big fan of the books and the game was geared for kids, so it was bound to be pretty easy to play3. A few starters and some booster later, several things were clear.

First, Kristie did indeed like the game. She got a lot more out of it than Steve did, since he'd wimped out after the first book4. Many of the characters, items, monsters, spells and whatnot were familiar to Kristie while Steve just sat around scratching his head.

Second, in their first few games, they seemed to be pretty evenly matched. Things looked pretty good: they each won a few games and none of them were run away victories.

As time went on however, there was one area where Kristie excelled. Harry Potter, despite the name, is a collectible game. Some cards are less common than others. The rarest cards in the game are the foils5. Since the beginning of their collections, Kristie has always outscored Steve on foils. The worst was probably the day they brought home a whole box of boosters6. We settled down and each tore open 18 boosters. Steve got 2 foils. Kristie got three times that many (or more, she doesn't really remember7). Needless to say, Steve isn't happy with this situation.

  1. No one knows exactly how many games he owns but its very clearly over 100, probably over 200 and maybe close to 300 - maybe he should challenge Kristie so she'll count them, kind of like the CDs.
  2. After the Pokemon parents revolted, the company that made both games decided not to use the word collectible.
  3. Note: Steve has never said Kristie can't play hard games, just that her time/reward curve is different than his - he doesn't mind spending an hour learning to play a game that he decides sucks in 10 minutes. She does.
  4. He has promised to try again.
  5. Foil cards are specially embossed embossed with a metallic foil. Harry Potter also has holographic cards which Kristie also has way more of than Steve.
  6. We got 36 of them for $15; the suggested price was about $3.00 each - guess it isn't selling.
  7. Steve suspects she just doesn't want to divulge the real number
