Outer Limits

Every street name really includes the kind of street it is, so Dix Highway, Thomas Street, etc are really the proper names of the streets. In some parts of the country, including that designator is critical1. In this part of Michigan, most of the time it doesn't matter - no one will be confused if you don't include that it's Allen Road you're talking about.

Kristie works in Melvindale in a school that's about a block north of Outer Drive. Outer Drive is one of the more confusing roads in Detroit as it seems to go everywhere and it turns up where you don't expect it2. It is one of those roads that always gets the designator after it.

Unless, of course, you're talking to Kristie who confused me for weeks by telling me she was having trouble making a left on Outer at the end of the day. I thought maybe it was some weird street in Melvindale3 until one day I was following her home and she asked if I saw what she meant about that stupid Outer.

  1. I once sent a package to Pennsylvania and, because I didn't include Street in the address it wound up in a different town.
  2. It helps if you realize it's just a big circular road that surrounds Detroit and parts of neighboring towns. We used to joke that you could take Outer Drive to anywhere in Detroit.
  3. Hey, every town has some weird street names.
