Unlucky Seven

It's hard to say if this was really a Friday the 13th event or not, but maybe. Steve was plugging away on the computer and managed to knock something off his desk. It fell and landed directly on the switch for the power supply1.

With the power off anyhow, Steve decided to install the UPS he'd bought the previous week. He crawled under the desk and unplugged everything from the current surge protector, hooked up the battery for the UPS and tried to plug it into the wall.

The wall socket for the desk is very difficult to reach, it's beside the desk2 and near the back. Steve lay upside down in the kneehole and tried it with no success. He rolled over and tried to "scooch"3 forward to plug it in. Almost immediately he realized he had cut his arm. He could feel that it was getting pretty wet and called for Kristie.

She came and tossed him a hand towel. Applying pressure, Steve struggled to his feet. After Kristie was done laughing at Steve's suggestion that she find some bandaids, both began hastily getting dressed/changed for their trip4 to the hospital.

The hospital visit was quick and mostly painless5. Steve got seven stitches and a prescription for some Tylenol 3.

  1. No, I'm not kidding. That's what happened.
  2. The desk has an overhanging top and, while it's not as heavy as some people have said, it's not the sort of thing you move alone when you have one leg in a soft cast.
  3. Yeah, I know, hard to imagine a guy Steve's size scooching.
  4. Later, the nurse told them no one ever actually bothers to put on clean underwear.
  5. Thanks to some cool numbing agents and prompt service.
