Just Desserts

Steve is a firm believer that you need to taunt your pets once in a while¹. Not surprisingly, Kristie doesn't really buy into this theory. She does, however tolerate this behavior once in a while as long as Steve doesn't get carried away ².

The other day, Steve found one of those paddleball things³. For a normal person, this might make an interesting distraction for a few seconds. Steve, of course, was distracted for minutes, then decided to taunt the dogs with it. He started by dangling the ball, then he swung it closer and closer hoping to brush their noses with it. The dogs, aware of his tomfoolering pretty much ignored him.

Steve was unhappy with this and resolved to get a rise out of them. He picked up the paddle and hit the ball toward SYD, hoping to get near his cute little dog face⁴. Well, he missed, and the ball went well past SYD, reached the end of the elastic, snapped back and whacked Steve square in the jaw. Yep, just desserts.

1. Nothing serious, just the odd chip they beg for before you eat it or a strange noise or two here and there that makes them tilt their head, that sort of thing.
2. Steve says this is proof that he's making her change to match him. Kristie says it's because when he's distracted by them he leaves her alone for a few minutes. The world may never know.
3. You know, with the rubber ball on a rubber band that you whack with a paddle as many times in a row as you can.
4. That Steve is a real jerk sometimes!
