Meet the Beast

December 26 is a pretty busy time at the Donohue homestead as Winter Campers start arriving at about 7:30. In 2000, it was busier than normal, since Steve had gotten even less packed than usual1

Campers were helping Steve load his gear into the truck - most of it was upstairs, but the computer was still being disassembled and Steve was doing that work. Somehow, the door to his truck got closed and the alarm armed. A moment later it went off when Ron opened the door.

Kristie got her first real understanding of Ron's "The Beast" nickname at that point2 as he grabbed the door and began violently shaking the truck while screaming obscenities. Steve remained unaware of these events as he was in the basement.

Ron stormed into the house, still screaming obscenities as he walked past the keys to the top of the steps to yell at Steve. Not satisfied, he started down them3. He was only slightly mollified when Steve told him they were upstairs on the divider. He lectured Steve on the stupidity of alarms on early mornings4 and then returned to his loading.

  1. An unexpected round trip to Indiana for Kristie's spare key was the culprit.
  2. Kind of like Jeanne finally understanding that Steve could be a dick when she found him making the "weapon tree" to mock one of the gamers.
  3. Kristie swears she heard Steve's mom say "I hope he trips" as Ron started down the stairs.
  4. Apparently alarms are much more disturbing than large angry men shouting obscenities while they try to rip the door off the alarmed vehicle.
