Frosties

Winter Camp, if you haven't guess it yet, has a lot of traditions1. One of those, started in 1988, is that the oldest person present2 has to buy frosties for everyone and the youngest person has to retrieve them. Doug started the tradition while we shopped for Winter Camp XII and it continued, unbroken, until Winter Camp XXII.

While we were shopping for Winter Camp XXII, Kristie drove to the Wendy's in Taylor3 and made arrangements with Deanna to buy eight large4 frosties and have them delivered to us. When Steve Harig, who was the youngest shopper that year, went up to get them, they were already prepared. He and Diana carried them out to the waiting campers who were, not surprisingly, very surprised.

There was a great deal of speculation as to who might have purchased the Frosties. The first person blamed was Ron Donohue, who hadn't made the trip that year and might have had his mother do it. Big Bro was also a candidate for the job, though less likely. Some speculated that Milon and Howey might have done it, with Howey doing it because he was part of a Big Bro Team and Milon involved because Howey wouldn't have ponied up the cash. Besides, they had arrived late at Meijer's, making them the ones with the best opportunity.

A year later, at Winter Camp XXIII, the mystery was intact. There was a lot of joking as we prepared for the shopping trip about getting free frosties again, but no one expected it to happen. Then, as if by magic, there they were again. The mystery deepened. Kristie, still in her guise as OV, admitted she bought them, but did it cryptically enough that most Winter Campers never figured it out. It was, however, widely assumed that Steve (who was late to Meijer's that year) had done it.

By Winter Camp XXIV, everyone knew that Kristie (aka Occassional Visitor) and Steve were dating and all that remained was to meet her. She was waiting when we arrived, sat with the group and then left with Steve after we ate our frosties. On the way out of the restaurant, Jeff demanded to see her license to ensure he wasn't being duped5.

  1. Some might say we're old and stubborn, others would say we're old and act like mules.
  2. Usually Doug or Jeff.
  3. That's right, she knew where we'd eat lunch, since Mark--> told her we'd eaten there for the last ten years.
  4. A rare blunder (if it was a blunder), and one that confused us a great deal: we always got medium frosties and any of our likely candidates would have known that.
  5. At one point, Jeff had requested a picture of Steve and Kristie kissing so he could verify her existence. Later, in a "girls underwear" moment, he modified his request to insist on a "french kiss" photo, one he deemed would be harder for Steve to fake. He may have some trust issues...
